MACHS 2014

Visiting North Dakota State University for MACHS 2014 (Oct. 2-5) was chilly but fun.

ISU received the following awards for 2014:

  • 2nd Place Overall Team
  • 1st Place Overall Individual—Brandon Miller
  • 1st Place Woody Plant Identification—Brandon Miller
  • 1st Place Herbaceous Identification—Lucas Roberts
  • 1st Place Overall Judging—Marcus Jansen
  • 3rd Place Overall Judging—Brandon Miller

For the Friday and Saturday tours, ISU enjoyed the NDSU AES Greenhouse Complex (greenhouse operations in ND are massive), NDSU Horticulture Research Farm (neat facts about cold-hearty trees, juniper berries, and grapes up north), Dale E. Herman Research Arboretum, Bergen’s Greenhouses in Detroit Lakes (HUGE, with concrete floors), and Bluebirds Gardens (organic CSA with 1,000 members, tremendous size for a CSA). We also received a career talk from Davey Tree Experts (Kent, Ohio) and Brickman Landscaping (Rockville, Maryland), and the keynote speaker for the awards banquet was Dr. Ron Smith from NDSU Horticulture Extension.
