Valentine’s Day is a day for showing the special people in your life how much you care, and the ISU Horticulture Club is here to help! Our first rose sale fundraiser was held in 2010, and it was a big hit. Every year since then, we have held our sale around an on Valentine’s Day to help spread the love, to give our fellow students an affordable option for showing the special people in their lives how much they mean to them, and to raise funds for club activities.
Cut flowers make up a multi-billion dollar annual industry in the US, and although the majority of cut flowers sold in the US are imported nowadays, the gift of cut flowers is still a timeless tradition. As such an important part of the horticulture industry, we feel it is important that our club members get hands-on experience, and see just how much hard work goes into running a successful florist operation.
Our rose sale committee organizes the event, from ordering floral material to creating arrangements for customers on Valentine’s Day. Senior and junior chairs gain experience dealing with vendors, learning how to receive and inspect shipments of floral material, and get opportunities to develop professional communication skills. We throw a “processing party” when we receive our incoming floral material, and all of our club members get a chance to get their hands wet and have some fun while learning about floral arranging.
This year the ISU Horticulture Club is pairing with the Food Science Club and their annual fudge sale. The perfection combination for Valentine’s Day… flowers and fudge!
